The Autism Society is dedicated to health equity, which is the foundation of a healthy life. People with Autism experience higher rates of medical and mental health conditions, poor health outcomes, and premature mortality. In addition to social and economic barriers, the Autistic community faces sensory, communication, cognitive, and other unique barriers to accessible healthcare.
We work to remove systemic barriers and support accessible, informed healthcare for Autistic individuals and those with complex support needs. Through education and practical strategies that can be used across many medical settings, we help reduce stress, improve communication, and increase confidence. Our ongoing efforts include healthcare trainings, advocacy, sensory supports, communication boards, injection tools, and accessible clinics focused on inclusion and dignity.
We partner with healthcare providers across Wisconsin – including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, public health workers, and pharmacy students – to deliver training and resources that help them better serve patients with Autism and others with complex medical and/or sensory needs.
We’re excited to partner with local healthcare providers to bring sensory-friendly, accessible vaccine clinics to our community. With calming tools, communication supports, and specially trained staff, we work to reduce anxiety and make every step of the vaccination process easier. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive experience where families and individuals feel understood and everyone succeeds.
