When a tornado impacts a community, the days that follow can bring unexpected changes, uncertainty, and big emotions. While every family’s experience is different, visual supports can help provide predictability, encourage communication, and create opportunities to talk about what happened. These tools can be especially helpful for Autistic individuals and others who benefit from visual supports, but they may be useful for any child or family navigating a stressful event.
To support families during this time, we’ve created the following free printable resources:
- Tornado Social Story to help explain tornadoes and the changes that may follow in a calm, reassuring way.
- Emergency Communication Board to support communication when routines, environments, or services have been disrupted.
- Emotion Choice Board to help individuals identify and express how they’re feeling.
We hope these resources provide a little extra support as families, caregivers, and professionals continue to care for one another.
